CLAY: We tried to share some optimistic stories during the course of today’s show, and this is one that I saw that I think is really interesting when you actually contemplate what is going on right now in the larger universe of the electorate, right? Right now, the Hispanic voters — according to a Wall Street Journal poll that came out yesterday — are breaking in a substantial way for guess who? Donald Trump, theoretically. Republicans over Joe Biden.
In fact, Hispanics are basically dead even right now in terms of whether they are going to support Republicans or Democrats in 2022 and in 2024. And interestingly, Buck, there now is a breakout where the Hispanic voters look almost no different than the larger electorate itself. This is a surprise, but we still have a large-scale difference in the way that men and women vote.
Men overwhelming support Republicans and Republican policies with both overall voters and now Hispanic voters. Women support Democratic policies. But if we can end up in a situation where the Republicans are basically even ground with Hispanics, it’s important because here’s a stat for you that I saw tweeted out by someone on Twitter here: 77% of voters in in 2020 were white. By 2020, it was down to 67%. Democrats have been of the belief that the Latino vote, “the Latinx vote” they would say, Hispanic birthright.
BUCK: Hispanic. They like Hispanic. That’s by far the preference. There’s also been polling on that.
BUCK: I do think it’s interesting that if you’re a strategist for the Democrats right now, you have really nothing to point at to show success, to show where things are going well, one option would be to stop being so crazy when it comes to covid stuff starting in the spring and going into the summer and really deciding, you’re not gonna do this anymore. They could…
Think about this, that at some level the problem the Democrats always have their base is full of lunatics but they need to win the moderates they need to win enough people in the middle a way to win people in the middle would be to not tell everyone they have to triple mask outside by themselves going for walks in the park anymore.
But can they do that without upsetting the single white females living in Brooklyn who scream at you for being in the grocery store without a mask on, even though there’s no mask mandate in New York City indoors right now, but the CDC recommends one. So that’s a situation that I think we’ll see playing out.
