Buck and Carrie Try to Watch TV Together, Fail
1 Aug 2022
BUCK: Over the weekend, I was with my fiancee, Carrie. We kept trying to find something to watch. Now, I have really gotten into this show Alone where they drop the peopleโฆ Have you guys seen this, by the way? Mike, have you seen this? This would beโฆ (interruption) You gotta checkโฆ (interruption) Come on! You gotta checkโฆ (interruption) No, not your thing? They drop people out in the middle of the woods in Canada with minimal โ very, very minimal โ gear, and there are grizzly bears walking around and they have to basically build really more like a log cabin than anything else.
They build a little structure for themselves, some kind of a hut. Then they got go out there and fish. Itโs very cold. Sometimes it snows. Anyway, I find it fascinating. Unsurprisingly, Carrie does not love this show. So, I tried. We turned on another show that is about some lawyer lady, who is in a plane crash in Canada, and then is in a survival situation โ noticing a theme here โ and that one didnโt pass muster, either. She did notโฆ You know, that did not go over well. So, Iโm trying to expand the palate out a little bit, if you have any great suggestions.
Youโre trying to thread that needle of a show that, you know, like Ali and Gerrard. Ali and Gerrard are engaged. I want to know what is the show that you guys can watch together, โcause we triedโฆ (interruption) You have one for me? โCause I tried The Time Travelerโs Wife, which was not very well done and then itโs also bizarre that this guy is traveling back to talk to his future wife when sheโs 12. Itโs just weird, right? Like, thatโs a weird thing. I know itโs time travel so itโs not real but, like, itโs still a little weird to me. I couldnโt really get past that whole situation. So that one didnโt last very long โ and we watched a movie.
There must have been some good movies that have been made in this past year, and we found one that we could kind of both agree on, although really she was just being nice to me because I had failed so miserably withโฆ I canโt even remember the name of the show, but itโs about this woman; sheโs like, โIโm an important corporate executive and, like, I need to get where I need to go right away, sir!โ These two guys are like, โAll right. Weโll take you in a plane.โ Boom! Plane crashes. Sheโs like, โOh, my gosh. Iโm cold. Iโm, like, my nails are chipping and, like, this is so bad.โ (interruption)
Yeah. (interruption) No, itโs a realโฆ (interruption) Iโm serious. This is the show. Iโm telling you, this is the show. I do not remember what itโs called. Itโs a Netflix show. So theyโre in the Northwoods. I donโt know if there will be, like, any wokeness involved โcause thereโs, like, no people. Just really grizzly bears and the occasional marmot, perhaps. But, anyway, we tried some of the survival shows. I like those. I cannot get Carrie to be a fan of those. And then we watched thisโฆ Itโs an old โ not older, but from earlier in the year called The Outfit, and it was a gentlemanโs B+, I would say.
So, maybe more like a B- but Iโd give it a B+ โcause Iโm in a good mood today. Itโs aboutโฆ Itโs like 1950s era Chicago, guy is a tailor โ a British guy is a tailor โ and then mobsters descend on his life. Iโll just put it that way. Itโs pretty good. Itโs likeโฆ It was, like, okay. I learned a little bit aboutโฆ I kind of wanted to get a tailored suit made after that. I was like, โOh.โ But then I realized, eh, sweatshirts are more comfortable. So we watched that show. So Iโm just saying thereโs such a lack โ and people always send me, theyโre like, โOh, have you heard of this show called Breaking Bad?โ
I was like, โYeah, of course, Iโve seen all the greats. Iโve seenโฆโ You know, thereโs this show that I think you might like, Game of Thrones.โ Yes, Iโve seen Game of Thrones. Iโm looking for something thatโs a little under the radar โcause I love those ones. I was an early adopter of The Last Kingdom, which Iโฆ Have you seen that one, Producer Mike? (interruption) Iโm pounding the table in here. You need to check that one out. Producer Ali knows. Itโs fantastic. Very, very good show for what it is. I like that one a lot.
And I was kind of an evangelist for that one. Itโs now in season 5. Obviously Peaky Blinders, which Clay has told meโฆ I think he just says it to placate me now, but heโs told me that he will watch that. That show is amazing. Itโs very, very good. For this audience, I think one that isโฆ If you havenโt seen it, it is definitely good; like, thereโs no part of it that will upset you or make youโฆ Itโs a little slow in some parts, but isโฆ Oh, my gosh. Poldark! Have you seen Poldark? This is one that I recommend to people.
I recommend it to my mom and my sister. They loved it. Handsome British guy, maidens on the farm, comes back from the Revolutionary War. I donโt know. I donโt know how to describe it other than he fixes the town, does some good stuff. Itโs a good show. Itโs a good show, and you can watch it. I think you watch that whole show even with like the kids. Itโs a whole family watch, I think itโs fair to say. Thereโs no naughty stuff particularly going on there, which I know some of you are like, โWell, that sounds boring.โ
But it is definitely not Game of Thrones-like in that respect โcause there were times even when I was watching Game of Thrones where I was covering my own eyes. I donโt think I shouldโฆ I donโt think I should watch that one. Any, I was just looking for a show we could watch. Iโm using all the resources at my disposal, Googling things and try to find something, and it is amazing how much garbage there is on Netflix. I donโt evenโฆ I dropped my Hulu. I think Iโm gonna drop my Netflix subscription. I donโt even know if itโs worth it anymore, just in protest at how bad so much of the content is.
I got rid ofโฆ Well, somebody I know may have been loaning me their Disney+, but that person got rid of their Disney+ because of what they did to Gina Carano. So, I was kind of part of that righteous moment, I guess, just by the fact that I was no longer watching Disney+. I got rid of my Hulu. I got rid of Paramount+. You know, you would think itโs so hard to get a show made, itโs so hard to get one of these projects greenlit, and then yet you see all these projects, and theyโre just trash, and you say, โWhy are they making so many really, really bad shows?โ
So, I retreated into my Keeganโs history of The First World War, which is A+, not gentlemanโs B+, not even gentlemanโs A+. A+. Great overview history of the First World War, which I would highly, highly recommend to anybody out there. So, weโre doing a little bit of bookโฆ I wish I had a great show recommendation for the audience. Poldark is old. It may be over a decade old now. It was Masterpiece Theater, though. Carrieโs probably telling me, โI didnโt mind the survival show,โ which she saysโฆ Yep. Yep. Sheโs listening. She doesnโtโฆ Thatโs always a fun thing, too, when the fianceeโs listening to the show.
Sheโs like, โI didnโt say it wasnโt good.โ Itโs like, โHoney, you kind of fell asleep on my shoulder five minutes into it. So I think if you were really into it, you would not, if you loved that survival show.โ You know, part of the survival show that is also, I find, of the Alive show โ or Alone. Alive is different. Thatโs about a soccer team in the mountains and then thereโs a little bit of cannibalism. That happens. Stuff happens. Old movie. Yeah, that was a real thing from back in the day. In the eighties, I think it was.
Alone, though, they leave these people out there, and what you see isโฆ I remember, I loved the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks. I donโt know why. And, you know, thereโs noโฆ Thereโs really very little music, thereโs real very little sound effects. Itโs just him on the island. You get some of those vibes except you know how Wilson becomesโฆ Be honest. Did you cry when he lost Wilson? Did you tear up a little bit? I got super sad when he lost Wilson, which, usually itโs just when anything bad happens to an animal that I have to fight back the tears.
Any dog, anything happens to a dog I get a little weepy. But when he lost Wilson, I got really sad. You see these people who are out there in the woods and they havenโt talked to anybody in, like, two or three weeks, they start getting a little weird. They start getting a little out there. (laughing) They, like, start singing crazy songs to themselves, wander around in the woods, and you realize, like, weโre all used to a very structured and communal and comfortable society. You leave people out in 30-degree weather and theyโre hungry for a few weeks, and things start getting pretty weird out there. Anyway, Iโd recommend that one. Thatโs a fun show, Alone.
